South Africa, AIDS and families

The AIDS epidemic ravaged South Africa killing off parents and leaving a nation of new orphans. One teenager struggled to keep his family together after his parents’ death. A grandmother worked to care for her several grandchildren. Teachers became surrogate parents to their students. These stories were produced through a National Association of Black Journalists Ethel Payne Fellowship.
